Family Devo Week of March 23: Turning to Jerusalem

Gather: Come together and bring something that can form a wreath. Gather some branches from the yard or if you have a twig wreath. Bring a candle and a hand towel or wash cloth, soap and bowl of water, paper and markers or pens. Light the candle.

Listen Toegether: Have someone share the story of the Last Supper. You can read from a Bible or tell the story in your own words, such as: Jesus sent some of his friends to get the room and meal ready for the Passover supper. He went to the room and as his disciples came in he asked them to take off their shoes and he washed their feet. This was a big surprise to the disciples because it is normally a servant's job to wash someone's feet. Peter really didn't want Jesus to wash his feet. But Jesus told him that it was Jesus' job to serve others and it will be their job to serve others too.

Then, Jesus took the bread that was for the supper and broke it and told his disciples to remember him every time they ate bread. Then he took a cup of grape wine and told them that it was God's promise to always love them and they should remember that promise every time they drank.

Share Together: Take turns washing each other's hands (or feet). As you do this, share stories of when you were served by someone and when you served another. What did it feel like? Who needs to be served by us right now? What can we do?

List your ideas on the papers and roll them and tuck them into the wreath. Make a plan to do one or more of these acts of service.

Pray Together: Thank you God for Jesus who taught us how to serve others and to remember always what he taught and how he lived. Help us to do that every time we take communion and every time we sit and eat with friends. Please care for all of those we care about (list names/hopes/conerns). Amen.
