Family Devo: A New Job!
Family Devotion for the week of February 2: A New Job
Gather Together: Come together and bring red heart stickers or a red washable marker.
Share Together: When Jesus invited his friends (disciples) to come with him, they stopped doing their jobs right away. When they were fishermen they used their hands to pull in nets of fish, throw nets out into the water, fix the nets that ripped, and carry things. Jesus asked them to start a new job and use their hands in different ways.
The disciples' new job was to take care of people. Their job was to join Jesus and help people remember that God is always with them and they would be OK, even when they felt worried or sad. Jesus' taught his disciples how to do their new job with a special lesson called the Beatitudes.
Read Together: Matthew 5:3-10
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Discuss Together:
Jesus says people who are lonely (poor in spirit), sad (mourn), who don't show off (meek), who want fairness, who put other people first, who think of God first, who make peace, and who are bullied because they try to be good are all blessed.
Jesus said that God blesses them and that the disciples should care for them -- that is their new job. Jesus asked the disciples to put a heart on their hands and use their hands to share God's love.
How can we be like the disciples and care for people who are lonely or sad?
Go Further: Read together The Kissing Hand. Think about the disciples new job as putting a kiss on the hands of those they meet so they remember that God always loves them. How can we have a kissed hand? How can we give kissing hands?
